TRICARE Research

**Updated** – You can read some of the submissions that have been sent in. Click on “Submissions to date”.

Hello everyone,

My name is Daniel Reed and I am a graduate student at Texas State University – San Marcos. I am seeking people who are covered by the military’s primary insurance system–TRICARE. I am collecting stories and experiences that people have with the military insurance system for my research and eventually what might become my thesis. This is just preliminary information in order to explore valid research questions. As it is common that people who respond to experience surveys usually respond negatively, I am strongly encouraging good experiences be submitted for this reason as well. If you would like to share your experience with the TRICARE health system please email them to me at danielreed@txstate.edu. If you find it easier to post a comment rather than emailing your reponse you are more than welcome to do that as well. At the bottom of the page you should see “leave a comment”.

Instructions for submitting a experience:

Please state your name and where you live (you can also remain anonymous). Then please describe your experience stating as accurately as you can response times and dates as best you can. Written responses can be as exhaustive as you like. I am also taking youtube videos as part of my research presentation so if you would like to do that please contact me and I can give you further instructions on how to do that. If you are already familiar with youtube you can post the video and send me the link (please keep the video under 3 minutes if you choose to make a video).

More information about my research:

My research is specifically for Dr. Balanoff’s Organizational Theory class at Texas State University – San Marcos. It will use empirical experience observations as well as survey data using a likert scale survey format. In my findings, I will attempt to display customer satisfaction, quality of coverage, customer service, and ease of information access. Also the data I collect will also be coupled with previous studies and surveys provided by the Department of Defense.

  1. I actually had to use TriCare today. I was having chest pain, the base doesn’t have an ER so I was able to go to the ER out in town. Tricare has been the best thing the military has offered us. We don’t pay for prescriptions. I am able to get an appointment in a timely manner. I haven’t had any problems with them not covering services. My dad is a retired marine and has, I believe it’s called Tricare For Life. It is the best benefit of his retirement. The retirement check isn’t huge but the medical insurance is the BEST out there!

  2. Kristi Hurd Says:

I have had excellent experiences with Tricare, with the exception of one. When my husband deployed to Iraq (we’re at Ft Hood, btw), me and my 3 month old daughter moved back to Utah to live with my mom. I found out that because I moved out of the area my husband deployed from, i was no longer eligible for Tricare Prime. This totally sucked, because that meant I had to pay deductibles and all that crap. What really got me was that there was a National Guard unit from my home town in utah that was deployed, and all their families were eligible for Tricare Prime…we went to the same doctors, but I had to pay. I don’t understand why Tricare would somewhat punish you for moving back home while your spouse is deployed. i was a brand new mother living in a town that I knew nothing about, of course I was going to go back to Utah! That’s been my biggest gripe…I wish they would change that.

  3. My husband has been in the military 33 yrs. If i could hold the money in my hands that Tricare had payed out on me in the last few years I could probably have sent all three of my children to law school and and my grand children. I have only one issue with doctors who are on the povider list or who will not sign up.I have experience this several times. My primary care doctor will send me for instance to neuro specialist, he begins to care for me ,i like the results of how he care for me .the next year he drops off the list. Doctors what more than what Tricare wiil allow to pay them. Its really not tricares fault im sure others have experience this too. Doctors, will you please take care your miltary families that give you the freedom to be a doctor?
